Brighten the day of a child this Christmas

Trustee Lydie Powell recently went to visit Mlop and has been compelled to lead our Christmas Appeal. Here is her story:

My name is Lydie Powell and I’m one of the Trustees of Safe Haven Children’s Trust. I recently went to visit the work we do in the Takmao province in Cambodia and was amazed by what I saw.

I would like to tell you about a little boy whose story really touched me.

Nara on arrival at Mlop

Nara is five-years old. He came to our centre when he was just two- days old because of a very complex and difficult family situation; his mother suffered from an abusive alcoholic husband and asked us to take Nara in because she feared for his safety. Time went by and she eventually left her husband.

Unfortunately, Nara’s mother still cannot take him back. She has another six children and with a daily salary of only $5 and is sadly not in a position to look after Nara.

For the last five years, we have been looking after Nara and he is one of the few children who have to live at the centre on a permanent basis. It is only recently that his mother relinquished

her rights as a parent to let us proceed seeking an adoptive family for her boy.

Nara, after a few months with us

“In Cambodia, social workers do not have the power to remove children to their families, unless there is clear evidence of physical or sexual abuse. And even this is difficult to prove. This makes our work more challenging because all we can do is be there and try to work with families to make sure children are treated fairly.”

Design and Make – LFW Fashion Show and Auction

One of our fantastic supporters is putting on a fabulous fundraiser for Safe Haven in September.

The aim of this fantastic event is to acknowledge and celebrate creativity and talent through our designs, display them at a fashion show and sell them to raise £10,000 for Safe Haven Children’s Trust.

The event will take place on September 13th from 7pm – 10pm, at St John’s Church, Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill, London, W11 2NN.

To purchase tickets or donate to our event please visit our page at and email with your name and how many tickets you would like.

In his own words:

My name is Gareth Williams (28 years old) and I live in Notting Hill, London. My background is in fashion design, studying for my degree at the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom, graduating in 2007. I would like this project to be an opportunity for everyone involved to acknowledge their talent and creativity.

This project will give everyone the opportunity to design, make or donate something that will make a difference to vulnerable children living in Cambodia. The event will be a fashion show and gallery showing and selling our designs/items during London Fashion Week on 13th September 2014 from 7pm at St. John’s Church, Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill, London W11 2NN, to celebrate our creativity and raise money for Safe Haven Children’s Trust in Cambodia.

I have assembled an amazing collection of emerging designers from across the world including Victor Pao (MA London College of Fashion), Katie Darlington (Kingston University, UK), Melanie Orzechowska (Northumbria University, UK) and established designers including Gilles Blachard (Design Director at Elie Tahari, Former Design Director at Calvin Klein, New York, USA) and Abigail Eaton (Head Designer at Ashley Isham) […]

Emperor Tours – a BIG festive thank you!

Hi all,
As it is the peak season for trips to Indochina, we thought now would be the ideal time to give a big, and very grateful mention, to our wonderful partners Emperor Tours! They are a small, but brilliant, tour company and the Safe Haven team are all trying to save our pennies to go on one of their trips!
Emperor Tours have been a phenomenal partner in 2013, fully funding not only all of Benedicta’s (our CEO) trips to Cambodia (accommodation as well as flights) but much, much more, including for a filmmaker to come out and make a wonderful film about our work. These donations save us THOUSANDS of pounds meaning that far more of our funding goes directly to the beneficiaries, and it also means that the UK team are able to visit more frequently – and hopefully in 2014 that Pheakdey and Phalla will be able to come to the UK to meet some of our supporters over here and help raise awareness of the cause.
We are very excited about this as it will be their first visit (and first flight ever!)
So – if you are thinking of booking a trip to Indochina, please consider the brilliant and philanthropic Emperor Tours – they are a small family run company, and we are extremely honoured, and grateful, to call them our partners.

Benedicta x

Lucy’s 2550 Mile Challenge for Safe Haven

Hi, my name is Lucy Grogan and I am your blogger today!

Safe Haven Children’s Trust is a charity I hold tightly close to my heart. In September, this Brit girl of 26 will be jumping on a motorcycle and riding across the USA from Orlando, Florida to Los Angeles, California in their name. Oh yes, and I’ve only just passed my test.

A few years ago when Safe Haven’s founder, my dear friend Benedicta Bywater, introduced me to her vision for the organisation I was deeply moved and unreservedly proud. She tells the story of Safe Haven’s evolution as an emotional ride. Dealing with the corruption so awfully present in the Cambodian government has not been easy. But the prevailing drive, the passion that radiates from her when she talks about Mlop Children’s Centre, the very centre that Safe Haven created, is palpable. It is on this determination and compassion for the children of Cambodia that she has built a place for them to be safe and healthy, to be educated and cared for, without the damaging effects of institutionalisation. When abandoned children or babies are referred or given to them, they take on all the full time care duties. They are educated, nourished, loved and developed in a safe, clean and positive environment. Just seeing the smiles on their faces brings about so much joy that one is forgiven for forgetting how much money and time it takes to keep a non-governmental organisation like this going.

They also manage to do something that even some children’s homes in the UK don’t attempt to do, and that’s re-homing the orphaned children with their biological parents, offering them free care options to help shoulder the cost having […]

“Mlop Works” – Our new craft project

A couple of weeks ago, we introduced our new project and our first crafter.
Well, it now has a name – Mlop Works – and we have four women working for us. They are being trained up as we speak, and new products are being created all the time.
We will begin selling online in February, but in the meantime we will have some photos of our prototypes, and some pictures and information about each of our crafters up shortly.
Please keep checking in for updates, and thank you so much for your continued support.

Thank you.
